Designing stickers for a business can seem like a small job. One logo, a short text, a shape and that's it. But when it's on a package, a display, a bag or a product, it becomes very visible. It's usually not just a pretty image that's needed. It's about getting the layout right so that there are no problems at the printer.
The sticker can be decorative, informative or sales-related. One for packaging, one for labelling, one for a promotion or event. The size, shape, text, colours and even the material depend on the purpose.
The product label requires even more precision, as it often contains ingredients, quantities, barcodes or other important information.
For example, a café sticker on a coffee cup can be very simple. A logo, a short sentence, maybe a QR code. And the product label must already be legible, clear and correctly composed, even if the format is small.
The sticker often appears larger on the screen than it will be in reality. It is therefore very important to check the actual size. Text that is too small, lines that are too thin and contrast that is too low can simply disappear on the print. Nice on the monitor does not mean good on the packaging.
There is always a practical side to print design. Print design must not only be beautiful, but also ready for actual production. Just like layout of publications, stickers have to be prepared not only with aesthetics in mind, but also with production in mind.
The files must be prepared for printing in accordance with the printer's requirements. Often overlaps, the right colour mode, vector elements and sufficient resolution are required. If these things are omitted, the print may be delayed or the result may look worse than expected.
Sticker rarely lives alone. It is seen alongside the website, social networks and packaging, menu or other promotional material. It is therefore a good idea to keep the colours, fonts and tone in line with the overall visual direction.
If stickers are used in campaigns, other formats are worth considering. For example, with social media advertising design you can keep the same message, but customised for the screen.
Correct technical files are also important for sticker layouts. More about this in the article how to prepare design files for print.
It is a good idea to print the sticker at a realistic size on a regular printer before sending it to the press. Even if the colours aren't exact, you'll be able to see straight away whether the text is legible, the logo is not too small and the QR code has enough space. On screen, a 4 cm sticker can look like a poster. It will not be on the product.
It is also worth thinking about the environment. A sticker on a jar, a box, a window or a bag behaves differently. A clear background may look nice, but on a dark background the text may bleed through. A glossy surface is eye-catching, but sometimes makes it difficult to read. Such details lead to more than they first appear.
